Climate Change Adaptation

Climate change adaptation refers to the many strategies that are possible and necessary for making human societies more resilient to the impacts of climate change. The inevitability of some amount of climate change (given the inertia of past and present emissions in the atmosphere) means that we are committed to adaptation strategies to contain the worst impacts.

However, given the certainty of an increasing probability of catastrophic impacts with incremental increases in temperature virtually all adaptation strategies are pointless without strong climate change mitigation strategies. Otherwise, the system impacts of the climate crisis will overwhelm the increased resilience of human societies from adaptation.
