[edit] 2nd annual Ecovillage Youth Convergence

September 21st - 23rd. There will be a carpool organized to help everyone get out there, and we will be joined by an Environmental Studies class (ES 414). Please sign up soon because spots will fill up quickly! If you have any questions please feel free to email danielgeselbracht@gmail.com. The intention of this second annual convergence is to bring together young adults of OUR local area and STIR THE FIRE of what is possible!!! We want to co-create together the local solutions, networks, and understanding…of how we can be empowered to develop a more sustainable community and live what we truly believe in. Last September, nearly 100 youth spent a day or the weekend together exploring sustainable living in a 'Transformational Learning' process. Transformational Learning is when we take theory and move it into practice (or a deeper in the bones sense of knowing of why!) Through presentations, dialogue circles, hands-on learning activities, celebration, and artistic expression we intend to move the 'theory' of sustainability into a real world 'practice', or practical application for ourselves. Have you been in classrooms discussing these issues? Hanging out with friends asking what does this mean? Wondered how as an individual you can make a difference? -- Then this is the weekend for you! The Convergence will begin Friday night with those folks who attended last year creating a leadership circle (they will support us in the activities of this years convergence), then Saturday is a full day of the main activities of the weekend, with Sunday being a second day of learning and networking.

[edit] Campus Community Garden Work Party

There will be a work party held at the gardens this Sunday (Aug. 12). This work party will be to prep the gardens for an early September potluck to bring awareness of the various Food initiatives on campus, local food security, and urban agriculture. The work party will start at 10:00 a.m. and go till 4:00 p.m. Snacks, drinks, and music will be provided. Here is a list of a few of the projects we will be working over the course of the day:

  • Painting garden signs (artists needed!)
  • Clearing paths and digging out a mound for potluck common area
  • Clearing out flower and herb garden beds
  • Prepping and planting a new veggie bed for a fall/winter harvest for the fall market
  • Getting agro on some invasive morning glory that has infiltrated the gardens.
  • Building a small greenhouse (potential)
  • Fixing the tool box (i.e. hinges)

If you have any tools that may be useful please bring them.

Please RSVP (danielgeselbracht(at)gmail.com) if you will be able to make it out for a part of the day, or if you're not sure you're welcome to show up at anytime. The gardens are located next to the Technology Enterprises Facility Building, on Sinclair Rd (McKenzie) across from the McKinnon Gym. Map link

[edit] Wheels for Change: 1000 km bike tour

June 30 - July 22, 2007

Nelson BC to Victoria BC

This is a campaign by British Columbians who want to give people in BC a chance to take positive action on climate change. The action is a 1000 km bike tour from Nelson to Victoria, from June 30th to July 22, open to all ages. With your help they hope to collectively cycle 40,000 kms - the equivalent to circling the Earth! You are welcome to join for any portion of the tour - whether it is 1 km, 10 km or the full 1000 km, it all contributes to the grand total. Also planned are community events along the way where they will share food, fun activities, stories, postcard-signing sessions and more.

If you can't come on the full tour, you can still join the ride on the July 20-22 weekend: We go from Maple Ridge to Burnaby on Friday, July 20th, from Burnaby to Delta on Saturday, July 21st, and then we take the ferry and ride on to Victoria on Sunday, July 22nd for the grand finale. All are welcome at the events, including bike processions, picnics and potlucks, stories, postcard-signing sessions, music and more, being held in each community. Visit the website to find out more, and to register while there's still room.
