Composting and Waste Management Project
From Common Energy UVic
The Composting and Waste Management Project is a Planning Project to create a section of the Going Beyond Climate-Neutral Plan. It is written by the Food Working Group
This is a rough draft

[edit] Overview
What is the project and how does it fit into the overall goals of Common Energy?
- Waste can generate GHG through decomposition, and in addition excess non-degradable waste uses up oil and takes up space in landfills. These both limit ability to go BCN. The project is to increase the amount of food waste/ organic waste composted and decrease the use of petroleum derived food packaging and single-use packaging.
How does it fit with the overlying working group?
- Food generates food waste. Compost and packaging from transport and storage as well as delivery.
What questions is the project answering?
- How can we reduce GHG impacts through the wastes associated with our food.
[edit] Prime Actions
What are the key parts of the project being worked on at the moment?
- Support the work of the Environmental Responsibility Committee (ERC) and the UVSS in expanding the SUB composting program.
- Raise awareness about opportunities to reduce resource consumption and composting in general on campus.
- Collaborate with the Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre to host workshops on campus to raise awareness in our community. These joint initiatives can be promoted through the Pocket Market and the Campus Community Garden.
- Support the ERC proposal for transition of the SUB to compostable utensils and dishware.
- Work to change campus people's behaviours to disposable container consumption.
[edit] Proposals
- Collaborate with Facilities Management to expand the current composting system, so that it includes more outside drop-off locations and receptacles in buildings.
- Work towards a campus-wide ban on disposable dishware and utensils.

[edit] Knowledge Base
The Knowledge Base is a source for climate change information, including summary and analysis materials assembled by Common Energy and information researched by individuals and Working Groups. It also includes links to climate change expertise and other groups working on related issues. (Include this)
