Milestone 1: Establishing and Equipping a Climate Action Team
From Common Energy UVic
Milestone 1 of Phase 1 represents establishing and equipping a Climate Action Team within an Organization such as a Faculty on campus. It will be part of the University Challenge Project, and is being currently being refined within the University Challenge Draft Document.
- Defining Organizational Boundaries
- Within a faculty or department's authority, what are their opportunities within the scope of direct emissions? ie. what do they have the power to change?
- What are the limitations to the faculty/department's budget?
- Identifying Champions (team members)
- What/who is a champion? (definition)
- What qualities should a champion have?
- Champions form a large network of their own to share information and work together
- Building a Faculty Team to support Champion
- How to engage people - each organization (e.g. Faculty/ Institute/Centre) creates a team with representation from the various elements that constitute it.
- Allows for better dissemination of information to all members of organization and collaborative planning and action
- These Champions teams are then linked together through a structure that facilitates information sharing and gives group rewards for achievement.
- Equip Team with information, process and structure
- Modified Formal Consensus…(?)
- Creating the Inventory budget
- Include in the budget funding to complete the inventory and begin the actions-based phase.
- Promotion/Social Marketing
- Post success stories online and celebrate success within the organization.
- Provide calculators so that participants can see the financial savings that their efforts are making to the campus (eg: reduced garbage costs; reduced energy costs; reduced need for more parking spaces etc etc)
- Raise Awareness within organization: How to engage other members of the organization? How to market progress? How to find common ground within organization and between individuals? What are the barriers people to entry? What are some co-benefits (example health, reduced costs ect). What are the perceived drawbacks to going beyond climate neutral? What incentives would encourage participation?
