[edit] Strategy for using the Planning Projects to create the Going Beyond Climate Neutral Plan.
- Jamie- Can we create a central question, that helps us create understanding about how/why we are working through the planning tool?
- Mark- If we don't have a centralized method for creating planning projects, there wont be cohesive projects in the plan
- Mark- It needs to be clear to the working groups why we have the tool
- Jamie- Comes back to common ground- How do we build on the ideas of the progress report to engage new people and provide the support for the implementation of these ideas? There is a huge opportunity to get big changes through in the fall.
- Mark- Unclear in the beginning of Working Group process - as in transportation about how effective the tools are
- Jamie- Planning projects gets produced in two ways: 1) doing a project, and then creating the broader plan based on that experience 2) Working more abstractly, particularly with the tool, to develop the actions and proposals
- Mark- Using transportation and the U-Pass as an example - the idea was to bring the plan to the BOG - then have them implement it
- Naomi- Realized that the she has a different understanding, of why we all chose to create this way. But, we chose a broad based participation structure- which give us more strength.
- Mark- Maybe we are falling down on long term strategic plan, so that we all have a clear idea of our goals and where we are going
- Jamie- the tool is meant to lower the barrier to participating, by creating explicate steps ie. Who we talk to and when and about what
ACTION- Complete an example for a longer time line, like climate financing. And, link this to broader process - Jamie
- Naomi- Thinking long term helps show where the outcomes are going, and this will help people with the planning projects.
- Mark- It will also help to manage expectations.
- Jamie- In the final sections of the plan, we should keep actions and proposal language to differentiate between what Common Energy will do and what the university will do.
- Dan- It seems that the main problem is some uncertainty about goals.
- Mark- students are more likely to take on projects that are physically more tangible - like the bike kiosk
- Naomi- Things like the Bike Kiosk in isolation does not have a BCN effect but in a holistic focus it adds to the overall plan to move UVic BCN.
- Jamie- This needs to be clarified and developed: What are the planning project? What are the tools available to these people and there projects.
- Naomi- If we had a page on the wiki that lists planning projects - which are the sections of the plan. So then each of these are linked to individual pages and when you clink on a link the page would open to skeleton of the tool- which has some of the actions/proposal and where things have been laid out.
Action - Create a list of the Planning Projects and fill in their skeletons with information from the progress report. - Naomi and Jamie
- Mark- I'm concerned about dishearting people if we make them us the tool.
- Jamie Q: what are we going to apply the tool too - it works on large and small scales, 1) an action can turn into a project, but we also need to have a broader plan that includes these smaller projects into the overall BCN plan.
- Mark- How do we communicate this to the working groups- we need to explain not only what we're doing but also what we're not doing.
- Jamie- Have to invest in the working groups, as they are the heart of the organization. There needs to be a lot of energy put into them.
- Dan- The working groups are hugely important - project planning tool, and the overall timeline should be the first on the agenda
Dan- left 6:30
- Mark- One of the problems is that the group doesn't feel either ownership/or use. We need to take it to the working groups to be developed - and thought through.
Decision- Members of the Research team will take the Project Planning Tool and the Planning Projects to the Working Group meetings to talk about how they fit and develop and customize them for the needs of the particular Working Groups.
Meeting end time: 6:55pm
