Common Ground Conference I
From Common Energy UVic
The Common Energy Conference will bring together an emerging network of students, staff, faculty and regional partners to find common ground and create local solutions to the climate crisis. How can we start to solve the complex challenges of the climate crisis, right here in Victoria, and right now before it is too late?

[edit] Finding Common Ground on the Climate Crisis
On February 5th there will be an afternoon and evening session between 1:00PM and 9:00PM in the Large Side of the Michele Pujol room of the Student Union Building. (While participants can come to one or the other, the sessions are not the same, the second will build on the first.)
At this University and in this region we have the knowledge, creativity, and resources to create solutions to the climate crisis. Our goal is to move the University of Victoria beyond climate-neutral – so that it does more to solve the climate crisis than it does to cause it.
The Conference will unleash our collective creativity through Common Ground, a style of conference inspired by Open Space. The Conference is focused on solutions and action around approximately half a dozen Focus Areas (e.g. Transportation, Energy, Civic Engagement). The Focus Areas will be created at a Conference Workshop in early January that will also be a trial run for the structure of the Conference. During the Conference participants will pick the Focus Areas that interest them and start a dialogue on solutions to the challenges that they present.
The central question that we will explore at the conference is: Working together at the University, we want to spark a transformation in the region, so that we do more to solve the climate crisis than we do to cause it. How are we going to make this happen?
The Conference will create ideas in these Focus Areas from groups of participants who will form the Working Groups of the Planning Partnership. The Plannimg Partnership will transform those ideas into implementable solutions. If you come to the Conference you are not obliged to join the Planning Partnership. In fact, regardless of whether you want to be involved you are still sure to learn a lot and meet a lot of interesting people. However, we don't want you to come unless you are sincerely interested in being a part of the solutions - whether or not you are working on them directly with us.
The dialogue on the Focus Areas is the core of the Conference. There will be a series of public lectures from UVic professors in the weeks leading up to the Conference.
