[edit] Overview

This is an idea for a project that would build awareness to change behaviour and generate support for institutional changes at UVic.

UVic is filled with people that want to do something meaningful about their contributions to climate change in their lives and in their work. The University Challenge creates a framework to connect these people into a network and get it working toward a common goal. The people in this new network then influence the networks of people that they work and learn with to spread change throughout the institution.

The first step is for an organization, say a faculty, department, or administrative office, to join the Challenge. That organization then selects some Champions that will form a team with representation from the various elements that make up the organization. For example, a department should have at least one professor, one staff person, and one student. An administrative office should have management and staff Champions working together in a Champions team. These Champions are then connected together across the university and they use their relationships in the workplace to create change.

The Challenge is designed so it can scale easily, across institutions, up the organizational chart, and over time.

[edit] What's new?

The University Challenge is currently working with the Law Faculty and Business Faculty. Within business, they have established a climate action committee, planned to incorperate local business projects into a Strategy class in the Jan-Apr semester, and contributed to planning for the green business workshop series in the spring. Within the Law Faculty, the student of the Environmental Law Club have held several meetings discussing the University Challenge, and how it will be organized within their Faculty. They have a strong student base, and many opportunities to do policy research, greatly reduce their GHGs, further engage with and contribute to the community, and a complete thorough GHG inventory.

[edit] Prime Actions

  • Immediate actions for the Jan-Apr semester within the business faculty
  • Spreadsheets and Calculators for the Inventories
  • January kick off for the Law Faculty
