We Can Do Even Better

In the late fall of 2008 the university released a Draft Sustainability Policy and Plan. The Draft was a good start. Common Energy thought that we could do even better. We launched the We Can Do Even Better campaign to get faculty and staff to go on the record saying that we could do even better.

The campaign was succesful, the final Sustainability Policy and Plan was signficantly strengthened and we thank the faculty and staff that went on the record and the work of all the students who connected with them.

You can find the Sustainability Policy and Plan here: UVic Sustainability Policy and Plan

Common Energy has put together a short video and a 2-pager that outlines some of the key ways in which the Draft can be improved. The key point is that by integrating our education, research, operations, and civic engagement we can help our local and global communities meet the challenges of climate change and achieve sustainability.

We have seen incredible support and excitement for sustainability building over the last few years. We are asking faculty and staff to join a growing number of their peers that think UVic can go beyond the current standard for leading universities. To be leaders, we need faculty and staff to get their support on the record.

Do you think we can lead? Here's what we need you to do: Email commonenergy@gmail.com to add your name and Common Energy will submit the List of Supporters to the consultation process.

Would you like to get involved in the We Can Do Better Campaign and play a direct role in UVic's move towards sustainability? Common Energy is currently recruiting! Email commonenergy@gmail.com for more information.

Check out our short video, "We Can Do Better."

Check out the 2-pager to learn more about the specific steps that UVic can take to go beyond climate-neutral.

Our recommendations are based on a year-long collaborative planning process that included hundreds of students, staff, faculty, and regional partners. You can find more by checking out the Guide to Moving UVic Beyond Climate-Neutral.

[edit] Want to get involved in the campaign?

If you are interested in helping Common Energy collect support for a more holistic, progressive Sustainability Policy and Plan for UVic, please contact Wes Hartman (whartman (at) uvic.ca).

We will be using a "buddy system", where groups of two CE representatives move from door-to-door in the building of their choice (see below for which buildings have been covered and which professors already spoken to), explaining the campaign to profs and taking names, departments, and e-mails of those willing to extend their support.

For a prof, supporting the campaign can mean as little or as much input of energy as they want. We encourage the posting of our 2-pager ([1]) on office doors. Wes has a number of copies of this document already printed out, so feel free to contact him for some. Also, for profs truly interested in helping out, we suggest contacting their colleagues with information about the campaign and instructions to e-mail their name and department to commonenergy@gmail.com

At the end of your canvasing session, please add their name and support status (see below) to this page.
